Like the majority of other stars in our galaxy, 40 Eridani B is one of a pair of two stars locked in a binary configuration. Unlike other stars, 40 Eridani B shares the same characteristics of its twin, 40 Eridani A. It is a bright red M-Class star exhibiting the presence of metalic-oxide metals. Titanium oxide is by far the most common metal, making 40 Eridani A a classic example of M-class stars. It is an extraordinarily stable star, suffering little from the gravitational stresses exerted from its partner.

This is the home system of the Vulcan people and has been the site of great hardship and revolution. It has seen invasions from alien races, the birth of new races, and the unlikely transition of a warlike, clan-oriented society into the most recognizable humanoids in the quadrant. Throughout all of this, the Eridani's most important planet, Vulcan, has endured.

Vulcan's role in the history of the United Federation of Planets and even the Romulan Star Empire is so involved that few ever invoke any name other than "Vulcan" when referring to this region of space. Perhaps this has to do with the stark emptiness of the region-this is the only system for light years in all directions. The exceedingly stable nature of 40 Eridani A and B, is, as you might guess, the subject of countless volumes of Vulcan--and Romulan--poetry.
