The intense gravity of Skiwolkr has attracted numerous stellar bodies,
including comets, asteroids, planetoids, and even the now M-class planet
D'gabo. Its orbits are a mess of objects orbiting irregularly and colliding
constantly. In a given hour, sensors indicate that five minor collisions
take place. At least one major collision occurs each day, with the resulting
energy often exceeding that of twenty kilotons of conventional chemical
explosives.
Skiwolkr's intense gravity has also attracted something else: political
strife. With the disappearance of the Tholian Hegemony, Romulan, Klingon,
and Federation explorers sensed the opportunity to occupy D'gabo, a
location only three sectors from Romulan space. Federation attempts
to occupy this world were rare, but Romulan and Klingon battles quickly
escalated. With the Klingons unable to sustain such an expensive campaign
and with the Romulans diverting their efforts elsewhere, the battles
for Skiwolkr became isolated incidents of guerrilla warfare.
Today, the region is controlled by Klingon and Romulan unit commanders,
and virtually ignored by their respective governments. It is quiet only
because the small ships in the area are in hiding, poised to attack
any vessel that moves in hopes that one side might gain an advantage
and push the other out. These actions continue despite a political agreement
on both sides that the Skiwolkr system should be considered Klingon
territory. Doubtless, the fighters in the area have not returned home
since the days of the Romulan-Klingon war that precipitated this agreement.
